Your audiophile vinyl records are precious investments that deserve proper care. Follow these guidelines to ensure your Stockfisch Schallplatten products maintain their exceptional sound quality for years to come.

Proper Handling

The Golden Rules

  • Always hold records by the edges and label - never touch the playing surface
  • Always handle with clean, dry hands
  • Never stack records horizontally (flat) - always store vertically
  • Never leave records out of their sleeves
  • Never touch the stylus or cartridge

When removing a record from its sleeve, place your thumb on the label and your fingers on the edge. Gently slide the record out, supporting it with your other hand underneath. This prevents fingerprints on the grooves and potential warping.

Cleaning Your Vinyl

Basic Cleaning (Before Each Play)

Use a carbon fibre brush to remove surface dust:

  1. Place the record on your turntable
  2. Hold the brush lightly against the record as it spins
  3. Move the brush from the centre outward toward the edge
  4. Lift the brush and remove accumulated dust
  5. Repeat if necessary

Deep Cleaning

For more thorough cleaning, use a dedicated vinyl cleaning solution:

  • Apply a small amount of cleaning solution to a microfibre cloth (never directly to the record)
  • Clean in a circular motion, following the grooves
  • Work from the centre label outward to the edge
  • Dry with a clean, dry microfibre cloth using the same circular motion
  • Air dry for a few minutes before playing

Never Use:

  • Household cleaners (Windex, alcohol, etc.)
  • Paper towels or tissues
  • Tap water (contains minerals that leave deposits)
  • Excessive pressure while cleaning

Proper Storage

Storage Position

Always store records vertically (upright, like books on a shelf). Horizontal (flat) storage, especially with multiple records stacked, can cause warping over time due to the weight and pressure. Even a slight warp can affect sound quality and tracking.

Environmental Conditions

  • Temperature: Store at 18-21°C (65-70°F). Avoid temperature extremes and fluctuations
  • Humidity: Maintain 45-50% relative humidity. Too dry can cause static; too humid can promote mold
  • Light: Keep away from direct sunlight and UV exposure, which can fade covers and damage vinyl
  • Heat Sources: Never store near radiators, heaters, or in hot attics

Sleeve Protection

Use both inner and outer sleeves for maximum protection:

  • Inner sleeves: Use anti-static, rice paper, or polyethylene lined sleeves. Replace paper sleeves that shed particles
  • Outer sleeves: Use clear polyethylene outer sleeves to protect the jacket from wear, ring wear, and scuffing
  • Shrink wrap: Remove shrink wrap after purchase to prevent warping, but keep it if it has hype stickers for collectible value

Playing Your Records

Turntable Setup

Proper turntable setup is crucial for getting the best sound from your audiophile vinyl:

  • Level surface: Ensure your turntable is on a stable, level surface
  • Tracking force: Set proper tracking force according to your cartridge specifications (typically 1.5-2.0 grams for most cartridges)
  • Anti-skate: Adjust anti-skate to match your tracking force
  • Cartridge alignment: Properly align your cartridge for optimal tracking
  • Speed accuracy: Verify your turntable is running at the correct speed (33⅓ or 45 RPM)

Before Playing

  1. Clean the record with a carbon fibre brush
  2. Ensure the platter and mat are clean
  3. Check that your stylus is clean and in good condition
  4. Handle the record by edges and label only
  5. Carefully place the record on the platter, centreed on the spindle

After Playing

  1. Remove the record promptly - do not leave it on the turntable
  2. Clean with a carbon fibre brush if needed
  3. Return immediately to its inner sleeve, then outer jacket
  4. Place back in storage vertically

Stylus and Cartridge Care

A clean stylus is essential for optimal sound quality and preventing record damage:

  • Clean regularly: Use a stylus brush or stylus cleaning fluid before each listening session
  • Brush direction: Always brush from back to front (never side to side)
  • Gentle pressure: Use very light pressure to avoid damaging the delicate cantilever
  • Replace when needed: Replace your stylus according to manufacturer recommendations (typically every 500-1000 hours)
  • Protect when not in use: Use a dust cover to protect your turntable and cartridge

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Static and Dust Attraction

Solution: Use an anti-static brush or anti-static inner sleeves. Consider using an anti-static gun. Maintain proper humidity levels.

Skipping or Mis-tracking

Solution: Check tracking force, anti-skate, and cartridge alignment. Clean the record and stylus. Ensure turntable is level.

Surface Noise

Solution: Deep clean the record. Check stylus condition. Some background noise is normal for vinyl - it's part of the analog experience!

Warped Records

Prevention: Store vertically, maintain proper temperature, remove shrink wrap. If you receive a warped record, contact us for a replacement.
